We have been to Iceland more than once; we have recently proposed you the Blue Lagoon volcanic baths. Today we are changing the landscape and temperature a bit. This time we will not lack ice and cold. Iceland – although small – has recently become quite a popular tourist destination, mainly due to the simplicity and wildness of the local nature, endless spaces and this magnetic feeling of freedom that permeates us with every breath of wind. There are many corners there, where from the very beginning the legs soften and the hands go up themselves to praise the Creator! One of them is definitely the ice lagoon – Jökulsárlón.
Jökulsárlón – dance of white and blue
Glacial lakes, because these lagoons are also called, are formed from the water from melting branches (tongues) of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. It may be hard to believe you, but 70-80 years ago they did not exist, and the tongue of the glacier reached the circumference of Iceland. Everything began to arise as a result of climate change. The glacier has been retreating by up to 500m every year since the 1930s, thanks to which we can enjoy eyes and spirit with such views.

In places where he left, water began to accumulate – and so over the years, three lakes were created here, which still grow. The glacial tongues calf, and the icebergs detached from it drift over the lagoons for several years before they melt and affect the open waters of the Ocean. The largest of these is Jökulsárlón, which has increased its area almost four times in the past 50 years and is now about 18 km².

From Reykjavik you have to drive along the southern coast. In the summer you can catch one of several buses during the day, in winter the transport does not look so rosy. So it’s worth going there – if possible – your own or rented car, especially since the road itself will provide a lot of experience related to the beauty of Icelandic nature.

On the spot you will be greeted with more or less such a view: ice floes and huge lumps of detaching ice, lazily circulate here and there, creating a stunning mosaic of white and blue, sprinkled with deep, volcanic black (the aerial view must be amazing!). You might think: It’s a mixture of water with different physical forms and that’s it. Nothing special. Maybe you will be right at first glance, but we assure you – no one, who is slightly sensitive to beauty, will not leave disappointed. Anyway, look for yourself …
